Description
The Ingemann Danish Evangelical Lutheran Church is a picturesque country church nestled in the scenic Loess Hills of Monona County near Moorhead, Iowa.
The church was constructed in 1884 in the late Victorian architectural style, and the magnificent oversized steeple was added in 1904. The steeple reflects the traditional Danish design seen in the rural churches in Denmark.
After a split in the Danish Luthern Church in 1894, the Ingemann Church became known as the Lower Danish Church. The Ingemann Chruch was a viable part of the community until the early twentieth century, when the congregation began to dwindle, and they lost their full-time pastor. The last confirmation class and baptism took place in 1954, but the cemetery is still in use today.
It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2012 because of its historical significance in the religious life of the Danish immigrant community.
