Description
On 12/3/2022, Columbus, Indiana, lost the Irwin Block, located on Fifth Street in the downtown historic district, to a fire. Losing its roof and much of the façade, it is considered unsalvageable and will need to be demolished.
The 130-year-old Victorian Queen Anne building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It was named for the great-grandfather of J. Irwin Miller, the late chairman of the Cummins Engine manufacturing company. The building was widely considered a Queen Anne masterpiece and most likely the best Queen Anne-styled commercial structure left in the state at the time of the fire.
I shot this image almost exactly one month before the fire. Not realizing I didn’t have my wide-angle lens in my bag, I struggled through a few shots along Fifth Street before leaving in frustration. The Irwin building was the last image I shot that day.
I was headed back down to Fifth Street on December 4th to reshoot the block when I discovered the roadblock and fire.
She was such a beauty!
