Artist's Description

Beauvoir as it is seen through the magnificent live oak trees on the plantation grounds. This estate was the post-Civil War home of Jefferson Davis, the President of the Confederate States of America.

Constructed in 1848 on the Gulf Coast at Biloxi, Mississippi, it was the home of Sarah Ellis Dorsey when she learned of Jefferson Davis’ money difficulties after the war. She invited him to visit the plantation and offered him a cottage near the main house in which to live while working on his memoirs. A few years later, when she learned that she was ill with cancer, she rewrote her will leaving him her entire estate.

After Jefferson Davis’ death in 1889, his widow and youngest daughter continued to live here until they moved to New York City in 1891. It was finally sold in 1902 to the Mississippi Division of the Sons of Confederate Veterans and was used as a Confederate veterans home until the very last Confederate veteran passed away in 1953. As the 8th photographer in 4 generations of my family, I don't remember a time when photography was not part of my life. By the time I was five years old, I was standing on a stool in the darkroom, helping my dad develop pictures. It was my job to transfer the photos from the hypo to the water bath. I went to college for interior design. After I graduated, I had a long successful career as an art buyer and designer for a large home furnishings company. In 2006, I had a significant life change.
