Description
The Jefferson Davis memorial monument on Monument Avenue in Richmond, Virginia. Unveiled in 1907, this impressive monument features a tall central column surrounded by a Doric colonnade.
The Confederate memorials on Monument Avenue have been a source of controversy since they were first built. In late 2017, the mayor formed the Monument Avenue Commission to get the public’s input on the future of the monuments. The commission has said that it would support or initiate the removal of the statue of Jefferson Davis, the former president of the Confederacy, saying that he was not a Virginian himself and noting that “of all the statues, this one is the most unabashedly Lost Cause in its design and sentiment,” referencing the ideology that paints the Confederates as heroic.
In mid-2018, the Commission called for the removal of the Jefferson Davis monument, along with a reinterpretation of the signage on the Lee, Jackson, Stuart, and Maury monuments.
Nothing has been done. For the moment, Jefferson Davis is still here.
