Artist's Description

The John G. Munson self-discharging bulk carrier in the harbor in Duluth, Minnesota.

John G. Munson was built in 1952 by Manitowoc Shipbuilding in Manitowoc, Wisconsin. Lengthened by 102 feet in 1976 to extend her useful life on the Great Lakes, she is 768 feet long. She is part of the Great Lakes Fleet out of Duluth, Minnesota, the only major fleet headquartered on Lake Superior. Gray and black stripes on red hulls identify the Great Lakes Fleet carriers.

Named after the Michigan Limestone and Bradley Transportation Company President John Gephart Munson, Mr. Munson held the position until 1939. He then became the Vice President of the parent company, United States Steel Corp, where he remained until his retirement in 1951.

Initially built to transport limestone, her cargos were typically limestone, sand, stone, and aggregates. Over the years, her loads have expanded into iron ore, taconite pellets, and coal.

My husband became a medical traveler, and I decided to put my career on hold to tag along. In the process, I found my roots again. What...
