Description
An obelisk marks the gravesite of John Tyler, the tenth president of the United States. Buried in Hollywood Cemetery, Richmond, Virginia in 1862, his grave is located on President’s Circle not from President James Monroe.
John Tyler’s death was the only one in presidential history not officially recognized in Washington, D.C. After leaving the presidency, Tyler attempted to broker a solution to the South’s secession. When that failed, he was named to the Confederate Congress as a Virginia delegate. Tyler died before assuming his seat in the Confederate Congress but because of his allegiance to the Confederate States of America, Abraham Lincoln and the federal government refused to acknowledge his death.
Tyler requested a simple burial, but Jefferson Davis hosted a grand event complete with a Confederate flag-draped coffin.
