Description
Kalahikiola Church located in North Kohala on the Big Island of Hawaii is listed on both the national and state historic registers. It was founded by missionary Rev. Elias Bond and his wife, Ellen, who arrived in the islands in 1841. The church was built by the parishioners who carried stones by hand from the surrounding areas for the walls, and constructed the roof from hand-hewn ‘ohia wood held together with mortise and tenon joints. Consecrated in October 1855, the church was named Kalahikiola after the small hill on the side of Kohala Mountain from which they cut the wood timbers. Kalahikiola, translates to “the day salvation comes”.
In October 2006, the beloved 151 years old church was devastated by a 6.7 magnitude earthquake causing its masonry walls to collapse.
Mason Architects were tasked with the restoration and historic preservation of the church. The roof and ceiling framing, supported by interior center posts, remained intact. The old stone walls were removed entirely and new CMU reinforced walls were erected. They have been plastered and scored with mortar lines to resemble the church’s original exterior. Windows, doors, woodwork, and hardware was carefully preserved and reinstalled in the new walls. Every bit of the original church that could be salvaged and reused was. Missing parts were replaced with the closest match. In 2010, Mason Architects received a Historic Preservation Honor Award from the Historic Hawaii Foundation for their work on this project.
