Description
This is the last intact Windmill Factory in the United States. Cousins Louis and George Kregel began building windmills across the street from the current location in 1879. Now the sole owner, George Kregel, built this building and moved the windmill factory here in 1902. He continued to build Eli brand windmills until 1941. Steel rationing during World War II put an end to the companies windmill building and in the last decades of the factory operation it was retail and service center. The company finally closed its doors in 1991 after 112 years in business.
This image features a scale model of an Eli Water Pumping Windmill. It is an unusual design because it has a C Knuckle instead of a hood like a typical windmill. There are no gears to operate this windmill, it is simply and shaft on a babbitt bearing inside of a crankcase.
This is also the area where they would have shaped and crimped the windmill blades.
The Kregel slogan for the Eli Windmill was: The best and simplest windmill ever made!
