Description
The La Cita restaurant opened in 1944 on the north side of Route 66 across the street from where it is today. In 1961, the restaurant moved to its current location, moving the distinctive neon sombrero sign with them. The giant sombrero hat over the door was added to the building sometime later.
La Cita was made famous with a rave review by Duncan Hines. Before Duncan Hines signed over his name for use on boxed cake mixes, he was well-known food and travel critic that rated restaurants and motels for travelers. Duncan Hines wrote the book, Adventures in Good Eating, which he updated and reprinted annually from 1936 to 1944.
La Cita's neon sign was one of nine neon signs restored during the 2003 New Mexico Route 66 Neon Sign Restoration Project. After the restoration of the sign, the building was repainted, and these beautiful murals were added.
