Ruggedly beautiful, La Perouse Bay sits at the base of Haleakala and is the site of Maui's most recent volcanic activity. Originally known as Keoneoio Bay, it was later renamed for the French explorer Captain Jean Francois de Galaup, comte de La Perouse who surveyed and mapped the area in 1786. This is literally the end of the road on this side of the island.
