Description
An Ohio Riverfront view of the Lanier Mansion in Madison, Indiana, decorated for Christmas.
Located on the banks of the Ohio River, the Lanier Mansion, a National Historic Landmark, was constructed in 1844. Designed as an elegant Midwestern Greek Temple, it is regarded as one of America’s finest Greek Revival homes.
The home was built for James F.D. Lanier, who made his fortune in banking and railroad development in the early nineteenth century. He was the principal stockholder in the Madison and Indianapolis Railroad and one of Madison’s most prominent citizens. By the early 1850s, he had relocated to New York City but supported Indiana during the Civil War by loaning the state over a million dollars to outfit their troops.
The mansion was donated by Lanier’s son to the Jefferson County Historical Society in 1917 and is now an Indiana State Museum and Historic Site.
The home is the crown jewel of Madison’s National Historic Landmark District, which now includes over 1800 buildings in approximately 133 blocks. It is the largest contiguous Historic District in the United States.
