Description
Known today as the Lincoln Depot, the Great Western Railroad Depot in Springfield, Illinois, is the site where Abraham Lincoln gave his farewell address to Springfield and boarded the train on February 11, 1861, bound for Washington, DC, for his inauguration as the 16th President of the United States.
Constructed in 1852, the Great Western Depot served as a passanger, freight station, and general office for the railroad. In 1857, the building was raised half a story after a fire to house the superintendent's office and received an extensive remodel. The depot closed to passenger traffic in 1868 after a new passenger station was built two blocks away. Sometime between 1886 and 1917, the front of the building was remodeled to make it a full two stories. The depot once had a large baggage/freight wing attached, which was destroyed by fire in 1968.
The Lincoln Depot was restored in 2012-2013. While the first floor is a tourist attraction, the second floor is the Noll Law Office. They own and maintain this historical Lincoln site.
The depot was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2014.
