Description
Statues of the Lincoln family stand outside the Lincoln-Herndon Law Offices in Springfield, Illinois.
The Lincoln-Herndon Law Office is this most recently renovated Abraham Lincoln historic site in Springfield, the exterior has been restored back to the 1840s, and it now houses the Springfield Visitors Center on the first floor. The second floor and third floors are still under restoration.
The building was constructed in 1841 to provide office space for professionals working in Springfield's newly chosen state capital city after it was moved from Vandalia in late 1839. In 1843, lawyer Abraham Lincoln and his partner Stephen T. Logan moved their law offices to the third floor of the Tinsley Block. It put them near the Illinois Supreme Court, which was located inside the now Old State Capitol in the center of the square, and the US District Court, one floor below them in the same building. The post office was also in the building.
The law firm of Logan & Lincoln broke up in 1844, and Lincoln took on William H. Herndon as his junior partner. As the firm of Lincoln and Herndon, they continued to practice law from this office space until around 1852. However, Lincoln wasn’t in the office very often, he excelled at trial work which took him to more than a dozen county courthouses throughout central Illinois. He also served one term in the US House of Representatives from 1847 to 1849.
The law firm moved to a newer office space on the west side of the Old State Capitol square around 1852, but that building has since been demolished.
The building was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978.
