Description
At six feet deep, the Wishing Well is the deepest body of water in Luray Caverns. By the end of the year, coins will cover the bottom of the Well and be two to three feet deep. It is drained and cleaned out annually, and the money is donated to a worthy cause. A sign above the Wishing Well lists the organizations that Luray Caverns has donated to and the total to date.
Luray Caverns is the largest cave in the eastern United States. Located in the Shenandoah Valley town of Luray, Virginia, I consider it a must-see if you are visiting Shenandoah National Park. The cave was discovered in 1878 by five local men whose attention had been attracted by a protruding limestone outcropping located near a sinkhole that had cool air rising from it. Luray Caverns was designated a Natural Landmark in 1974.
