Artist's Description

A male Gambel's Quail.

I was thrilled to find Gambel's Quail at Bosque del Apache. It was my first time to see these desert quail. They are nothing short of cute, with their comma-shaped topknot of feathers on their heads bobbing as they peck food and scurry around.

The male has a bright rufous crest, chestnut flanks striped with white, and creamy belly with a black patch while the females are grayer, and do not have a strong head pattern.

They live in coveys of a dozen or more, walking or running along the ground, in the Sonoran, Mohave, and Chihuahuan deserts of the Southwest below 5,500 feet in elevation. While they do fly, their flight is explosive, powerful, and short.

My husband became a medical traveler, and I decided to put my career on hold to tag along. In the process, I found my roots again. What...
