Description
The Map Room at Mammoth Hot Springs Hotel in Yellowstone National Park.
Adelaide Child, the widow of hotel company president Harry W. Child, initially conceived the map. She suggested it to architect Robert C. Reamer, who was working on plans to replace Mammoth’s 1880 hotel at the time. The two had worked together for years, Reamer designing her husband’s hotels, which she furnished upon completion.
This stunning work of art dates to 1936, when America had only 48 states. It measures 17′ 2″ by 10′ 4″ and was created using 15 different varieties of wood from nine different countries. The map contains 2,544 pieces of wood. Reamer poured over maps at the Seattle Public Library with no precedent upon which to base the design. The largest and best map available was only three feet by six feet, so it had to be photostated in sections to bring it up to size. The map has one mistake: while marked in the correct location, one of the State Capitals is misnamed.
