Description
Mansfield Covered Bridge spans the Big Raccoon Creek in Mansfield Village, Parke County, Indiana.
Mansfield Bridge, at 279 feet, is the second longest covered bridge in Parke County. J.J. Daniels was awarded the contract to build this double Burr Arch double-span truss bridge just a month after completing the Roseville Bridge. He completed the Mansfield Bridge in 1867.
The Mansfield Covered Bridge is located on the historic Indian trail that connected Orchard Town, now Terre Haute, to Cornstalk, an Indian village in the Sugar Creek Township. The trail became part of Indiana State Road 59 in 1926.
J. J. Daniels, built the bridge to be strong enough for wagons loaded with goods typically transported in 1867, but impressively, the bridge has a 10-ton load limit today. There’s a story about the Mansfield Bridge from its State Route 59 days that really defines J.J. Daniels’s skill as a bridge builder. Three loaded oil trucks approached the bridge. When the first truck stalled just before exiting the bridge, all three trucks ended up on the bridge simultaneously. Surprisingly, their combined weight did no structural damage to the bridge.
