Description
The historic white Mansfield Roller Mill sits on the Big Raccoon Creek in the small village of Mansfield in Parke County, Indiana.
While a mill has been in this location since 1825, the current Mansfield Mill dates to 1880. When Jacob Rohm bought the mill in 1875, he tore down much of the original mill, constructed a new turbine mill on the old mill’s foundation, and converted it from a grinding mill to a roller mill. Clad in the original weathered yellow popular clapboard, this vernacular mill rises three and a half stories from its sandstone foundation.
While Jacob Rohm owned this mill, his sons eventually added mills in Montezuma, Rockville, Mecca, West Union, Bloomingdale, Judsun, and Marshall. The Rohm Brothers Mills flourished in the waning years of the nineteenth century.
Mansfield Roller Mill continued to grind flour and meal for the community until at least 1920, when it was converted into a feed mill and store since competition from the large milling enterprises that produced standardized flour in small packages proved too much competition.
