Description
The Mellon Institute building in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, is part of Carnegie Mellon University.
The Mellon Institute, founded in 1913 by brothers Andrew and Richard Mellon, was originally part of the University of Pittsburgh. After becoming an independent research center, it moved to this new building on Fifth Avenue. The Mellon Institute eventually merged with the Carnegie Institute of Technology in 1967 to become Carnegie Mellon University.
This neo-classical building, designed by architect Benno Janssen has the largest monolithic columns in the world. Andrew Mellon, who had served as the US Secretary of the Treasury, wanted the building to have a monumental ionic colonnade similar to the Treasury building in Washington, DC.
The building was completed in 1937 and dedicated posthumously to the Mellon brothers.
Today, the Mellon Institute building houses the Dean's Office for Carnegie Mellon University's Mellon College of Science, administrative offices, and research laboratories for the Department of Biological Sciences and the Department of Chemistry.
The building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1983 and was designated a Pittsburgh Landmark in 2003.
