Description
The Midpoint Café on historic Route 66 in Adrian, Texas.
This café is the oldest continuously operating café along historic Route 66 between Amarillo, Texas, and Tucumcari, New Mexico. Notice the white stripe on the right side of the image, the Route 66 midpoint marker is right in front of the café. So you are either halfway to Santa Monica or Chicago, depending on which way you are headed.
It was Zella's Café in 1928 when it first opened along dirt Route 66 as a simple block building with an earthen floor. In 1947, the Café was busy enough to be open 24/7, and the building was enlarged. However, business slowed in 1969 when I-40 came through. It changed names and ownership many times through the years but has always remained open. It has been the Midpoint Café since 1995.
The cute car outside is a nod to the animated film Cars. The Midpoint Café was the inspiration for Flo's V8 Café.
