Description
The historic Mingus Mill in Autumn.
Mingus Mill is the largest Grist Mill in the Smoky Mountains. When completed in 1886, its water-powered steel turbine design made it one of the most advanced mills in the area. The Mill ground corn and wheat for over 200 families, some of these people traveled more than 15 miles to make use of their services.
Saturday was traditionally considered mill day. The Mill property would be busy with customers, and people would gather to socialize and exchange other goods and services. Most mountain folks did not have money; they bartered for everything. The charge for milling services was called a Mill Toll. This toll, usually 1/8th of their grain, would be deposited in the toll box as payment. The miller could then sell that to other customers or keep it for his personal use.
Mingus Mill is located in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park not far from the Oconaluftee Visitors Center on the Cherokee, North Carolina side of the park.
