Description
One of the more prominent buildings downtown Vicksburg, Mississippi, this historic Gothic/ Romanesque Revival-style building was once the city’s post office and custom house. Completed in 1894, the 59,000 square foot is four stories tall with an eight-sided tower on the northeast corner. It was designed by William Freret, a former confederate soldier.
Today, it is known as the Mississippi River Commission building, and is the headquarters to the US Army Corp of Engineers Mississippi River Commission and the Mississippi Valley Division. The Mississippi River Commission manages the Mississippi River drainage that covers 41% of the continental United States.
