Description
Today it is known as Morgan’s Store, but when it first opened in 1898, it was the Spade Ranch company supply store, the ranch business office, and post office. Although the Spade Ranch is 20 miles northeast of Ellsworth, Nebraska, a historical marker is on the north end of the store.
After 1927, the store changed hands several times. It sat empty from 1967-1971, until Veldon Morgan, a former Spade Ranch Cowboy, purchased it. He and his son Wade built two warehouse additions to the original store; through the 1970s and 1980s, they manufactured western tack and saddles and employed over 100 people. Morgan’s western equipment sold nationwide. However, Morgan’s began to downsize in the 1990s and by 2000 had ceased factory operations.
Morgan’s is now a ranch supply and general store. It’s an eclectic store that carries clothing, boots, leather goods, guns, ammo, tack, and just about everything a cowboy could need.
The store was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2010.
