Description
An elaborate bandstand was built on this site around the time Forest Park opened in 1876. Built of wood, it was renovated for the 1904 World’s Fair. By 1911, it was again in disrepair and closed once again for repairs. Sadly, it was destroyed by a storm and fire not long after that. The spot sat empty for many years but the city continued to hold concerts there.
In 1924, St. Louis lawyer Nathan Frank donated $50,000 to erect a new bandstand in this spot. It was the first private gift to a St. Louis Park. Dedicated in 1925, it was built in the classic Renaissance design, with white marble, bronze railings and a copper roof. It was renamed, the Nathan Frank Memorial Bandstand, after his death in 1931.
