Artist's Description
The design for the Nebraska State Capitol was selected from a nationwide competition with Bertram Goodhue a New York architect being the winner.
Tower on the Plains was his design concept. The broad low base reflects the expanse of the prairie while the tall tower rising from the center is a landmark to be viewed for miles away.
Goodhue proposed constructing the building out of durable Indiana Limestone with a traditional cross within a square floor plan. The building design was appealing because it could be built in four phases to fit the Nebraska pay as you go budget.
Construction began in April of 1922. Workers built around the existing Capitol building. This allowed government business to continue uninterrupted during the construction of the first phase. I'm a travel photographer that enjoys photographing United States architecture, nature, and transportation. As the 8th photographer in 4 generations of my family, I don't remember a time when photography was not part of my life. By the time I was five years old, I was standing on a stool in the darkroom, helping my dad develop pictures. It was my job to transfer the photos from the hypo to the water bath. I went to college for interior design. After I graduated, I had a long successful career as an art buyer and designer for a large home furnishings company. In 2006, I had a significant life change.
