Description
The town of Cuchillo, New Mexico, was established in 1850 and parts of the Old Cuchillo Bar & Store may even be older than that. The building has housed many different businesses over the years, including a trading post, stables, mercantile, post office, hotel, and saloon. It was once a stagecoach stop. Freight was unloaded here and then taken by wagon to the nearby mines in Winston and Chloride.
At one time, around 2000 people called Cuchillo home, and it was the hub of the county. Unfortunately, only about 35 still reside in the area, and it’s considered a ghost town.
The bar and the church down the street are the only original buildings remaining.
