Description
The historic Old Stone Presbyterian Church in Lewisburg, West Virginia, is thought to be the oldest church building in continuous use west of the Alleghenies.
The congregation first worshiped in a log building in 1783 before this new limestone church was built in 1796. Originally a square building, an addition was added in 1830, making it the size seen today. They continue to hold services every Sunday.
During the Civil War Battle of Lewisburg, the Old Stone Church was a hospital for the Union and Confederate soldiers. After the Union’s victory, a trench was dug beside the church to bury the Confederate dead. They were later reburied at the Confederate Cemetery at Lewisburg.
The Old Stone Church was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1976.
