Description
Split Rock Creek, which flows right through the middle of this park, is lined with scenic Sioux quartzite formations varying from shelves several feet above the water to 50 foot vertical cliffs.
Pioneers first settled in this area beginning in 1865. By the 1870s, a flour mill and feed mill were built that drew their power from the waters of the creek and this area grew into the bustling town of Palisades. Silver was discovered downstream in 1886 which caused a short lived silver rush. When the silver was discovered to be of low quality over 300 claims were abandoned virtually overnight. The town is long gone and the area is now a state park.
The steel truss bridge that can be seen in this image was built in 1908 and is on the National Register of Historic Places.
