Description
American author Pearl S. Buck's birthplace in Hillsboro, Pocahontas County, West Virginia.
Mrs. Buck was born in this home in 1892 while her parents were on leave from Presbyterian missionary work in China. They returned to China just three months later.
This historic three-story home, circa 1875, was constructed by Buck's maternal Great-Grandfather, Cornelius Stulting, to look similar to the house they had in the Netherlands. Unfortunately, after two years of construction, he died shortly before it was completed, and construction was finished by her grandfather and an uncle. Her mother grew up here and the home is a museum today.
Mrs. Buck was heavily involved in the home's restoration, even writing about it in her book, My Mother's House.
Pearl S. Buck was the first American woman to win the Pulitzer Prize (1932) and the Nobel Prize for Literature (1938). In addition, she wrote over 100 books and hundreds of short stories and magazine articles.
