Description
A Pileated Woodpecker looks over his shoulder at me.
It may be because wildlife is so used to people at the Great Smoky Mountains National Park but, I don’t think he realized that HE was the object of my attention. Instead of flying off, he decided to nonchalantly scoot around the tree until he was out of sight. He should have paid more attention to what he was doing because he fell face-first off the tree, giving me the best laugh of my day!
It was my first time seeing a Pileated Woodpecker, and I stood in awe of his size. They are the largest woodpecker in North America. Adults are crow-sized, 16 to 19 inches in length, with a wingspan of 26 to 30 inches, their average weight is about 11 ounces. It is easy to distinguish the sex of the Pileated Woodpecker; the male has a full-red crest on their head and a red mustache, while the female has a half-red, half-black crest and a black mustache.
