Description
Located at mile marker #17, Potkopinu Trail is the southernmost section of the Natchez Trace National Scenic Trail. This 3 mile long stretch of the trace is the longest section of the historic Sunken Trace remaining.
Potkopinu (Pot-cop-i-new) is the Natchez Indian word meaning "little valleyā€¯. Hike the entire trail and you will discover that some embankments are over twenty feet high, making Potkopinu a very fitting name.
The Natchez Trace Parkway roughly follows the Old Natchez Trace, a historic forest trail that extends 444 miles from Nashville, Tennessee, to Natchez, Mississippi. This trail was created and used by Native Americans for centuries. During the 18th and 19th century, European and American explorers, traders and emigrants used the Trace for travel. Seven segments of the historic Natchez Trace are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
