The intersection of Michigan Avenue and Adams Street in Chicago, Illinois, is the official starting point of Route 66. There is a Route 66 Begin sign in the foreground high above my head, and the iconic 110-story tall skyscraper known as the Willis Tower, formerly the Sears Tower, can be seen in the distance.
Even though it is early morning, out of frame is a small crowd of international travelers that have already gathered with me, taking turns photographing each other with the sign. I can feel their anticipation as they stand at the official starting point of their Great American Road Trip on the Mother Road.
It's such a beautiful day to begin a journey that spans eight states for 2,448 miles before it concludes at the Santa Monica Pier on the Pacific Ocean. Route 66 is a road trip that is not about the destination but all about the journey.
