Description
The abandoned State Line Café, Gas Station, and Motel in the Route 66 ghost town of Glenrio, Texas.
Glenrio is a Route 66 ghost town located on the Texas/New Mexico line. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places as the Glenrio Historic District, it includes several service stations, diners, motels, and the Route 66 roadway.
Homer Ehresman owned and operated the complex until the mid-1970s when I-40 bypassed the town and put it out of business—being in the interesting location of almost sitting on the state line, the center of the sign used to read, "First Stop in Texas" on one side and "Last Stop in Texas" on the other.
A fun fact about Glenrio is that during the 1930s, you went to Glenrio, New Mexico to drink because the Texas side of town was in a dry county. You went to Glenrio, Texas, for gas because New Mexico had higher gasoline taxes.
When you hit the west edge of town, the road has a concrete median strip. This is the indicator that you are entering New Mexico.
