Description
Old Fire Chief gas tanks sit in front of the Jones Motor Company Texaco along Historic Route 66 in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
Jones Motor Company and Texaco, was both a service station and a Ford car dealership. Ralph Jones had it constructed in 1939. Built in the Art Moderne style, with curved walls, a stepped tower, and angled gas tanks, it was considered the most modern station in the West when it was completed.
Ralph Jones was an advocate for Route 66 and was the president of the Route 66 Association, the Albuquerque Chamber of Commerce, and chairman of the New Mexico State Highway Department during the mid and late 1940s.
The building is currently empty again after 21 years as Kelly’s Brew Pub and Restaurant. However, there are plans for a new restaurant to open in this location by the end of 2021.
It was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 1993.
