Description
An awe-inspiring view of the Royal Gorge and Royal Gorge Suspension Bridge with the Sangre de Christo Mountains in the background.
The Royal Gorge Bridge is located near Canon City, Colorado. This bridge crosses the Royal Gorge at 956 feet above the Arkansas River. The main span of the bridge between the towers is 880 feet, the total length is 1,260 feet, the width is 18 feet and the towers are 150 feet high. The steel base structure is covered with 1292 wooden planks.
Originally built in 1929, the bridge received very little damage in the 2013 wildfire that destroyed the rest of the Royal Gorge Park with only 13 boards needing to be replaced. It was the highest bridge in the world until 2001 and the world's highest suspension bridge until 2003. The bridge remains the highest bridge in the United States.
