Description
A weathered statue of Saint Rita, the Santa Rita Mission Church’s patron saint, stands on a pedestal outside of the church in the Ghost Town of Riley, NM.
As a child in Cascia, Italy, Margherita Lotti wanted to become a nun, but she married instead to please her parents.
Unfortunately, her husband was abusive and unfaithful. He was killed about 20 years into their marriage, and Rita fulfilled her childhood dream. She cared for the ill and troubled until she died of tuberculosis in 1447. When Santa Rita was canonized on May 24, 1900, she was bestowed the title of Patroness of Impossible Causes. Her feast day is May 22.
