Description
San Jose Catholic Church, AKA Saint Joseph's Mission in the ghost town of Cuchillo, New Mexico, was built in 1907.
The town of Cuchillo was established in 1850. Located about halfway between the mines at Chloride/Winston and the railroad at Engle, Cuchillo flourished as a stagecoach stop and trade center through the 1870s and 1880s.
Today with only a population of about 35, the church and the bar down the street are the only original buildings remaining.
In 2011 Cuchillo was designated a Traditional Historic Community.
