Description
When driving down the Pali coming back into Honolulu, traffic always seems to come to a stop right by the Sanju Pagoda in the Kyoto Gardens at Honolulu Memorial Park. I am always intrigued by the juxtaposition of this traditional Japanese structure right up against the cities skyscrapers.
In Japanese culture, a pagoda is a sacred place of worship.
Built in 1966, just 20 years after the Pearl Harbor attack, and modeled after the Hokke-ji Temple in Nara, Japan, it was built as symbol of the strengthened relationship between Japan and the United States. It was 119 feet tall when finished and was the largest pagoda in the United States at the time.
The Sanju Pagoda was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2004.
