Description
The historic Raymond Schulz Round Barn near Pontiac, Illinois, was built in 1918 after Mr. Schulz viewed the University of Illinois's three Agricultural Experiment Station round barns.
Still standing today, the Schulz Round Barn, eventually acquired by U of I, is now part of the University's Experimental Dairy Farm Historic District. It was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1994 in a multiple property submission.
The University of Illinois played a special role in promoting and making the American round barn popular in the Midwest. However, they were first built by the Shakers as early as 1824. The Shakers chose to build round barns since they required less lumber and bracing for the barn's framework, and the construction was simplified since they didn't need scaffolding when putting on the circular arched roof. As a bonus, round barns eventually proved more resilient against Midwest prairie storms.
Today, eighteen round barns remain in the state.
