Description
The Spitz Clock stands next to the New Mexico Museum of Art. It looks like a giant gold pocket watch on a long green stem.
Originally in front of the Spitz Jewelry Store, it is the jewelry store's third clock. Spitz purchased it second-hand in Kansas City in 1916. Made by E. Howard and Company, the clock is believed to be the only Howard clock in existence with its original gears intact.
The first clock was placed in front of the store when the business was established in 1881. That clock didn't have any inner workings and was used strictly to advertise their wares. That clock was replaced around the turn of the century with a working clock, the second clock lasted until 1915, when it was mowed down by one of the first trucks in Santa Fe.
The clock stood in front of the jewelry store until the Plaza's south portal was built in 1967. At that time, Bernard Spritz donated it to the city and it was placed in its current location in 1974.
