Description
The Springfield Marine Bank located across the street from the Old State Capitol in Springfield, Illinois, was chartered as the Springfield Marine & Fire Insurance Company in 1851 and is part of the Central Springfield Hisotric District. It is the oldest banking instution in Illinois that has been in continuous operation since the day it opened and is now part of JPMorgan Chase. Abraham Lincoln banked at the Springfield Marine Bank.
Completed in 1928, the Marine Bank Building seen here is the fourth bank building to occupy this location. All the banks have been built on the same site. For the first thirty-five years, the bank occupied the old State Bank Building. In 1886, that was razed to make way for a new three story brownstone which was used until 1921. The next building only lasted six years before rapid growth made it necessary to build a larger structure.
