Description
Intake Tower #1 was constructed in 1894. Designed by William Eames in the Richardsonian Romanesque style, this oval castle-like tower with a green conical-shaped roof has been compared to the famous Moure Tower in the Rhine near Bingen, Germany. Tower #1 sits close to the Missouri shoreline just below the Old Chain of Rocks Bridge.
By 1913, Intake Tower #1 could no longer meet the City of St. Louis’s rising water demands, and a second water tower was needed.
