After our Waipio Valley tour we hurried back to the Waipio Valley Overlook for sunset. It had been a voggy/hazy day and I had always heard that vog (volcano smog) makes for colorful sunsets. Sunset sure didn’t disappoint, even though the sun was setting behind the Kohala mountain range, it threw amazing colors high up into the sky making this Waipio Valley Sunset a fairly rare image.
Located along the Hamakua Coast on the northeast shore of the Big Island of Hawaii, the Waipio Valley is the largest and most southern of the seven valleys on the windward side of the Kohala Mountains. The valley is a mile wide at the coastline and almost six miles deep with a beautiful black sand beach. Bounded by 2,000-foot cliffs, the "Valley of the Kings" was once a favorite retreat of Hawaiian royalty. I'm a travel photographer that enjoys photographing United States architecture, nature, and transportation. As the 8th photographer in 4 generations of my family, I don't remember a time when photography was not part of my life.
