Description
Scouts Rest Ranch located in North Platte, Nebraska was the home of Colonel William F. Cody more famously known as Buffalo Bill. He built Scout's Rest in 1886 as a place to relax between show tours. This is where he entertained in elaborate style his famous contemporaries as well as old friends from his frontier days.
Cody originally came to Nebraska in 1869 as a guide, scout and buffalo hunter for the 5th Cavalry at Fort McPherson. Buffalo Bill first went on stage in 1872 but he did not form his first Wild West Exhibition until 1883. Buffalo Bill was the most noted Nebraskan of his day. His many national and European tours of his Wild West Exhibitions made him a living symbol of the American West.
He was involved in farming and ranching and was a pioneer in the development of irrigation in both Nebraska and Wyoming.
Scouts Rest Ranch was place on the National Register of Historic Places in 1976 and is a Nebraska State Historic Park.
