Description
This bronze statue is of Meriwether Lewis and William Clark along with their dog, Seaman. It originally sat at the edge of the Mississippi River in the shadow of the Eads Bridge and spent more time in the water or underwater than above. As part of the Gateway Arch and park renovation that was completed in 2018, it was restored and placed in a new location about 200 feet south and 17 feet higher.
“The Captains’ Return” was dedicated in September of 2006 and honors the 200th anniversary of Lewis & Clarks return after their famous trip to explore the Missouri River. A plaque near the statue reads: “At noon on September 23, 1806, the Lewis and Clark expedition ended on the St. Louis riverfront after a journey along the Missouri River to its headwaters, a passage of the Rocky Mountains and a descent to the Pacific Coast via the Columbia River. Returning by roughly the same route, they arrived in St Louis after two years, four months and nine days of exploring the lands and encountering the peoples of the American West.”
“The Captains’ Return” was sculpted by Harry Weber.
