Description
A truly magical location where you can almost imagine water sprite and fairy’s frolicking in the water, Houghton Falls State Nature Preserve protects a picturesque little sandstone gorge along the Lake Superior shore just north of Washburn, Wisconsin, USA.
The upstream gorge is shaded by a canopy of trees and overhanging rocks. There is a charming stream that meanders through the site creating a series of small waterfalls that cascade over sandstone shelves into a cove with clear water and a sandy bottom. This series of cliffs and caves is called Echo Dells and it is my favorite part of Houghton Falls!
Many are under the misconception that this is the location of the falls, but it isn’t. If you continue down the trail about 2/10 of a mile farther, you will find the waterfall that the Nature Preserve is named for.
Houghton Falls can be found on Wisconsin’s Bayfield Peninsula and is part of the Lake Superior Scenic Byway and the Apostle Islands.
