Description
As the sun sets over Kilauea Volcano we begin to see the glow from the lava lake within Halemaumau Crater.
Located inside the crater is the world’s largest lava lake. It is currently 10 acres in size and continues to grow. The height of the lava also fluctuates; on this day, the lava lake was at 135 feet below the crater rim.
UPDATE
On April 2018, the lava lake at Halema'uma'u Crater rose to an all-time high and the lava covered two-thirds of the crater floor with fresh lava. This was just a hint of what was to come. Later in the month, the lava lake began to drain as lava emerged from the rifts in the Leilani Estates. Halemaumau has now collapsing in on itself with the crater being at least double the size it was when I photographed it here.
This is now a view of Halemaumau Crater that will never be seen again…
Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is located on the Big Island of Hawaii.
