Description
The jagged plate ice fields of Lake Superior at Brighton Beach in Duluth, Minnesota
During the last week of January 2019, the Polar Vortex hit. Duluth, Minnesota reached a low of -31F with a wind chill of -58. Lake Superior went from 20% ice cover to 50% ice cover in just a few days and fields of jagged ice started building rapidly along exposed lakeshore.
These plate ice fields are created when strong winds and subzero temps create massive sheets of thick surface ice. As the ice blows toward shore and the surf throws it into the land, it begins to shatter and pile up onto itself resulting in mountains of jagged glassy ice.
