Description
An exterior view of the North Christian Church in Columbus, Indiana, designed by architect Eero Saarinen. Both dramatic and expressive, the hexagonal-shaped church with its central metal spire rises 192 feet in the air. It is topped with a 5-foot-tall gold leaf cross.
Eero Saarinen, known for his neo-futuristic style characterized by curvilinear and organically inspired sculptural forms, passed in 1961 and never saw the church completed as it was not finished until 1964. Still, he considered its design one of his most outstanding achievements.
Added to the National Register of Historic Places and designated a National Historic Landmark in 2000. Indiana Landmarks added the North Christian Church to its Top 10 Most Endangered Landmarks list in 2018, hoping to find a way to save it. In 2019, Landmarks Columbus was awarded the Keeping it Modern Architectural Conservation Grant from the Getty Foundation. The city is developing a conservation management plan for this iconic church’s long-term upkeep, but it has been permanently closed since July 2022.
The American Institute of Architects’ rated Columbus, Indiana, sixth on their Top 10 list of American cities for architecture in 1991. More than 60 buildings in Columbus were built by architects that many consider modern masters, such as I.M. Pei, Eero Saarinen and his father Eliel, Cesar Pelli, Richard Meier, Harry Weese, Robert Venturi, and James Polshek, to name just a few.
