Description
The horse-drawn Red Carriage drives down Duke of Gloucester Street near the Magazine at Colonial Williamsburg, Virginia.
The Magazine was built in 1715 to store the arms and ammunition for the defense of the colony. By the nineteenth century, the locals were affectionately referring to the building as the Old Powder Horn. The Magazine was the first building to be purchased by the Association for Virginia Antiquities when it was founded in Williamsburg in 1888.
This was the location of the famous Gunpowder Affair. An early conflict in the American Revolutionary War, the residents of Williamsburg, led by Patrick Henry, confronted Lord Dunmore, the Royal Governor, at the Magazine when he ordered the removal of the colony’s gunpowder.
